Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Publication Date: May 3rd 2016
Summary:

Six years have passed since England’s King Charles II returned from exile to reclaim the throne, ushering in a new era of stability for his subjects. Except for Elizabeth Milton. The daughter of notorious poet John Milton, Elizabeth has never known her place in this shifting world—except by her father’s side. By day she helps transcribe his latest masterpiece, the epic poem Paradise Lost, and by night she learns languages and sword fighting. Although she does not dare object, she suspects that he’s training her for a mission whose purpose she cannot fathom. Until one night the reason becomes clear: the king’s man arrive at her family’s country home to arrest her father. Determined to save him, Elizabeth follows his one cryptic clue and journeys to Oxford, accompanied by her father’s mysterious young houseguest, Antonio Vivani, a darkly handsome Italian scientist who surprises her at every turn. Funny, brilliant, and passionate, Antonio seems just as determined to protect her father as she is—but can she trust him with her heart? When the two discover that Milton has planted an explosive secret in the half-finished Paradise Lost—a secret the king and his aristocratic supporters are desperate to conceal—Elizabeth is faced with a devastating choice: cling to the shelter of her old life or risk cracking the code, unleashing a secret that could save her father…and tear apart the very fabric of society.

Historical fiction books are always a hit or miss for me, and I always say that when I am reviewing them. I am not going to love every single one I read, but damn, I was hoping I was going to love this one. I give books at least 25-30% before I decide if I am going to DNF, and for this book that was roughly a 100 pages. My main issue was the pacing, it was slow. From the description I was hoping something faster paced. People said it got better in time, but if I am not into it now I am not going to be because I am frustrated. Maybe one day this one will be for me, because I was anticipating it highly.

Title: Unrivaled (Beautiful Idols #1)
Author: Alyson Noel
Genre: Contemporary, Thriller
Source: Edelweiss
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Publication Date: May 10th 2016
Summary:
Everyone wants to be someone. Layla Harrison wants to leave her beach-bum days for digs behind a reporter’s desk. Aster Amirpour wants to scream at the next casting director who tells her “we need ethnic but not your kind of ethnic.” Tommy Phillips dreams of buying a twelve-string guitar and using it to shred his way back into his famous absentee dad’s life. But Madison Brooks took destiny and made it her bitch a long time ago. She’s Hollywood’s hottest starlet, and the things she did to become the name on everyone’s lips are merely a stain on the pavement, ground beneath her Louboutin heel. That is, until Layla, Aster, and Tommy find themselves with a VIP invite to the glamorous and gritty world of Los Angeles’s nightlife and lured into a high-stakes competition where Madison Brooks is the target. Just as their hopes begin to gleam like stars through the California smog, Madison Brooks goes missing. . . . And all of their hopes are blacked out in the haze of their lies. Unrivaled is #1 New York Times bestselling author Alyson Noël’s first book in a thrilling suspense trilogy about how our most desperate dreams can become our darkest nightmares.

This book was a huge cover lust and author's writing lust thing. I was so confident that I was going to love this as much at Noel's previous books. Sadly I didn't make it in far before I realized that this wasn't a me book. The idea is an interesting one, I will give the book that. But I despised the characters, rich, entitled and bratty is not my thing. Being a suburban girl in a middle class family characters like that don't appeal to me, and no connection to them was made. Like I say with all DNF books, maybe at another time this book will be for me, but at this moment in time I did not enjoy it.

Here is the thing though, my opinion is harsher than a lot of people. I won't say to not give these books a chance because they do deserve them. Even though my cup of tea wasn't for me, it doesn't mean this won't be yours! So I do urge you (despite my reviews) to try them out!

Excerpt

Hanging his head, he pushed his chair back to face her. What do you want me to say, Kode? You saw what I did. Its hopeless. Im going to end this world. Whether its tomorrow or a thousand years from now. Im going to lose it all. Break bad and tear humanity apart. . . . Dont matter what we do. Whatever we try. We just delay the inevitable outcome. So Im going to sit here with my eats. And just . . . he let his voice trail off as the full horror of his future played through his mind for the five millionth time.
He was the end of everything.
Everyone.
All he loved.
The entire world would one day fall to Nicks army of demons.
Yeah, there was something to put on his college applications. That ought to have schools lining up to accept him. Who wouldnt want that as their alumnus? We have graduated senators, presidents, movers-and-shakers, and the Malachai demon who ate the world whole
It was the one reality Nick wanted to deny and couldnt. Everything eventually came back to that one inescapable fact he wanted to runaway from and couldnt.
Im only sixteen. Too young to deal with this crap.
He was supposed to be worried about his grades. About keeping his girl happy. Staying out of trouble. His mom finding his friends porn magazines stashed in his room. Getting to work on time. Making curfew.
Not hellgates and demons coming for the throats of his family and friends.

Definitely not about the fact that his birthright was to bring on the destruction of all humanity.

The New Authors on the Block: Character Interview with the cast of DREAMOLOGY + Giveaway

Welcome back to the 4th month of The New Authors on the Block! This month we are introducing debut author Lucy Keating the author of Dreamology and today for the final post of April we have a Character interview

Character Interview with Alice, Max, Oliver, & Sophie

Describe your dream kiss!

Alice: I don’t really care as long as Max is there. I mean, actually part of the kiss. Not like standing next to us.

Max: Hot air balloon, probably (smiles to himself).

Sophie: Something dramatic, a real declaration of love, in front of a lot of people!

Oliver: Totally spontaneous, in a crazy location, that can never be replicated again.

Max, what did it feel like the moment you saw Alice in class that day?

Max: I thought I was having some sort of breakdown. The stress of getting into college was finally catching up with me. That first class was so painful, all I wanted to do was stare at her, figure out who she was. To reach out and touch her and see if she was real. By the end I just convinced myself it must be some kind of crazy coincidence. Because if it wasn’t…well what then?

Describe a perfect day!

Alice: Me, Jerry and Max, walking along the Charles River, having a picnic, then spending the rest of the day at the Isabelle Stewart Gardner museum. And Jerry would be allowed in, of course. Even though he is a dog.

Max: I score the winning goal in a soccer game against our biggest rival, ace a final exam, and celebrate by whisking Alice away for a long drive to the southern coast of Massachusetts. With Jerry, of course.

Sophie: Walking the streets of Paris in winter time, coffee in a cozy café, and a kiss on top of the Eiffel tower!

Oliver: A fantastic dinner followed by a wild party in Ibiza! I can’t go back there though, I almost got arrested last time.

What do you think you’ll major in in college?

Alice: I’m gonna major biology so I can study the brain and figure out what happened to us. But I’ll probably minor in creative writing. I’ve been told I have a pretty…active imagination.

Max: Psychology. Levy says I have a knack for it, and I like having rational explanations for things that seem out of our control.

Sophie: Pre-law. I wanna be a badass lady litigator. I have a lot of opinions.

Oliver: How should I know? I’m taking a year off to backpack around South East Asia.

Thanks for taking the time to chat with me guys!

ARC Review: The Hunt by Megan Shepherd

Title: The Hunt (The Cage #2)
Author: Megan Shepherd
Genre: Science Fiction, Romance
Source: Edelweiss
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Publication Date: May 24th 2016
Summary:
They’ve left the cage—but they’re not free yet. After their failed escape attempt, Cora, Lucky, and Mali have been demoted to the lowest level of human captives and placed in a safari-themed environment called the Hunt, along with wild animals and other human outcasts. They must serve new Kindred masters—Cora as a lounge singer, Lucky as an animal wrangler, and Mali as a safari guide—and follow new rules or face dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, Nok and Rolf have been moved into an enormous dollhouse, observed around the clock by Kindred scientists interested in Nok’s pregnancy. And Leon, the only one who successfully escaped, has teamed up with villainous Mosca black-market traders. The former inhabitants of the Cage are threatened on all fronts—and maybe worst of all, one of the Hunt’s Kindred safari guests begins to play a twisted game of cat and mouse with Cora. Separated and constantly under watch, she and the others must struggle to stay alive, never mind find a way back to each other. When Cassian secretly offers to train Cora to develop her psychic abilities—to prove the worthiness of humanity in a series of tests called the Gauntlet—she’ll have to decide fast if she dares to trust the Kindred who betrayed her, or if she can forge her own way to freedom.

I simply adore Megan Shepherd's writing. I loved her The Madman's Daughter trilogy and I am loving The Cage trilogy so far. Packed full of action, suspense, the unexpected and sacrificing the things you love the most to save yourself. Just when you thought the stakes couldn't get and higher, they do.

After Cora's failed escape attempt and the shocking reveal that Cassian is the mysterious Warden. Instead of being locked away in a prison cell for the rest of her life she is put to work in a safari menagerie (a hang out for the Kindred to uncloaked and enjoy human pleasures) but Cora isn't done fighting yet. With a chance of freeing humanity only days away Cora trains and strains her minds to do the impossible. (Levitate objects, reads mind and more.)But with the sizzling tension between Cassian and Cora things more complicated then they both expected. With the help of Leon, Lucky and a few others locked away with her Cora hopes she can gain her freedom and the rest of humanity's. *This is a spoiler free run down of the book*

The book is told in alternating point of views, Cora, Lucky, Mali, Rolf, Leon and Nok. Each going through a different experience or a different view point on what would happen next.

Cora- A majority of the book is told in Cora's point of view, so I have more to say about her then other characters. Cora is fierce. I found a lot of character growth in her this book then I did previously. Though she made stupid choices that did work out in the end, and some that failed she stayed true to what she believed in. I also think her feelings for Cassian and the ones she battled played a huge role and in what she sacrificed. I'm excited to see how she will lead the others and save humanity in final book of the series.

Lucky- At the end of the The Cage I believed Lucky to be a bad guy, but it was their enclosure that made him like that. I loved seeing the character he developed into through out The Hunt. I liked that Shepherd kept most of her characters together on the safari instead of separating them like she did to Nok and Rolf. But the ending made me tear up a bit. I won't spoil it for you all but you will see what I mean.

Mali- I really love Mali. We learn a little more about her in this book, but I don't have much to say about her. I liked that she is developing feelings for Leon and questioning all the things that she believed the Kindred have told her.

Rolf and Nok- I put them together for one reason: they finally grew on me. I despised them in the first book, and I guess I still do a little but they are stuck in a research facility for the Kindred to study the human customs when a couple is expecting a child. Both are doing everything in their power not to loose their baby to the Kindred who plan to take it away once Sparrow is able to live outside utero.

There wasn't much romance in this book, but the scenes there were I found a little heavy (which I like a lot) but I wish there were more Cora and Cassian kissing scenes to be honest. But I am hoping in the next book! Although this isn't what I was expecting the turn the the series would take I enjoyed it all the same. Characters I didn't expect to grow on me (Nok and Rolf) did, and I have a new appreciation for the romance that I hope will work out in the end.

Review: My Mad Fat Diary by Rae Earl

Title: My Mad Fat Diary
Author: Rae Earl
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Rating: 3/5 Stars
Paperback, 350 Pages
Published April 19th, 2016
Summary: It's 1989 and Rae Earl is a fat, boy-mad 17-year-old girl, living in Stamford, Lincolnshire with her mum and their deaf white cat in a council house with a mint green bathroom and a refrigerator Rae can't keep away from. She’s also just been released from a psychiatric ward. My Mad Fat Diary is the hilarious, harrowing and touching real-life diary Rae kept during that fateful year and the basis of the hit British television series of the same name now coming to HULU. Surrounded by people like her constantly dieting mum, her beautiful frenemy Bethany, her mates from the private school up the road (called “Haddock”, “Battered Sausage” and “Fig”) and the handsome, unattainable boys Rae pines after (who sometimes end up with Bethany…), My Mad Fat Diary is the story of an overweight young woman just hoping to be loved at a time when slim pop singers ruled the charts. Rae's chronicle of her world will strike a chord with anyone who's ever been a confused, lonely teenager clashing with her parents, sometimes overeating, hating her body, always taking herself VERY seriously, never knowing how positively brilliant she is and keeping a diary to record it all. My Mad Fat Diary – 365 days with one of the wisest and funniest girls in England.

I received this book from St. Martin's in exchange for an honest review, and I was excited because I've enjoyed diary-entry stories in the past, and having this one be nonfiction was super daring and brave of the author. Apparently it's also becoming a TV series on Hulu, which I don't have, but I'm curious to see exactly how that would play out.

As for the story itself: I liked it. It was an enjoyable read, even if it wasn't anything mind-blowingly spectacular. But being that it's literally the journal of a teenager in England, I didn't expect it to be filled with a lot of the literary devices and shock mechanisms that fiction work has. But the main character (and author herself), Rae -- gosh, she was hysterical. Some of the things that she said and the jokes she made actually had me shaking with laughter. She's sarcastic, dramatic, and witty -- the three staples of being a teenage girl.

The story takes you through all of the drama that Rae faces throughout her high school years -- boys, her (lack of) sex experience, friend drama, backstabbing girls, her unstable home life, problems with her mother, etc. All of the people mentioned in the book are real, but they've either been given code names or had their names changed to protect the privacy of whoever they were.

Because -- this takes total guts -- Rae Carson took the plunge and published her entire teenage diary with little-to-no editing other than some name changes. And that's SUPER scary -- I couldn't fathom putting my personal teenage thoughts out there for the entire world to read. I don't let another soul read my journal, so I couldn't imagine sending it to a publishing company, and then even having it become its own television series! (Speaking of which, I might have to borrow somebody's Hulu account to check it out, because I'm kind of intrigued.)

What I found the funniest about the entire story was Bethany. She was just such a cliche mean girl, and some of the things that Rae said about her were pretty hysterical. I also enjoyed how quickly Rae jumped from falling from boy to boy -- something that happens a lot in teenage girls and was entertaining to watch from the spectator position for once. I read "I think I love him" more than a few times in this book.

All in all, My Mad Fat Diary was an entertaining read. It was funny to peek into the author's life and see how she survived high school and all of the friends and drama she had -- it was even funnier when you realized that stuff actually did happen. If you're looking for a good laugh within a light read, I definitely recommend this one!

I'd like to thank for St. Martin's for giving me the chance to review this book!

Review: This is Where it Ends by Marieke Nijkamp

Title: This Is Where It Ends
Author: Marieke Nijkamp
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Rating: 2/5 Stars
Published January 2016
Hardcover, 285 Pages

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24529123-this-is-where-it-ends?from_new_nav=true&ac=1&from_search=true

Summary: 10:00 a.m. The principal of Opportunity High School finishes her speech, welcoming the entire student body to a new semester and encouraging them to excel and achieve.
10:02 a.m. The students get up to leave the auditorium for their next class.
10:03 a.m. The auditorium doors won't open.
10:05 a.m. Someone starts shooting.
Told from four different perspectives over the span of fifty-four harrowing minutes, terror reigns as one student’s calculated revenge turns into the ultimate game of survival.

I feel really let down by this book, because it was one of my most anticipated reads of 2016 and it ended up not delivering. The cover was really well done and the summary itself makes you think that the story will be fast-paced and interesting, but it in fact ended up being the quite opposite. So before I get to what I did enjoy about the book, there were definitely a few things that I didn't like at all that need to be addressed.

1. The story progressed so slowly. The entire 285 pages of the book take place over one day -- in the fifty four minutes of the school shooting. That alone is a big indication that the book will drag on. But my point is that I would read the same moment from the perspective of ALL FOUR narrators -- so I basically lived each moment of the shooting four times each, from four different perspectives. Which got really old and redundant after awhile.

2. This is the 21st century -- it would not take the police as long as it did to respond. The book never gives any indication that the setting is older than the current time period -- it actually shows the quite opposite by adding several parts with Twitter feeds and blog posts (which I talk about further in #8). So why did it take so long for the police and reinforcements to get to the school to help? And why did they wait so long to go in? It just didn't make sense. I felt myself growing more and more frustrated the longer that the law enforcement didn't do anything, because you know that in a real life situation, they WOULD be doing something. (They also wouldn't have let Claire and Chris stay back on the scene -- they'd get them as far away from it as possible.)

3. There was no depth to any of the characters. You knew nothing about any of them other than that Silvia and Tomas were twins, Autumn was the shooter's brother and loved to dance, and Claire and Chris were kissing on the scene of a massacre because why the hell not?

4. You know nothing about what happens after the shooting is over. Does Autumn dance again? How does Silvia's mother take everything? WHAT HAPPENS TO EVERYBODY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

5. The author killed people off with abandon. Literally. I get that it's a school shooting, but basically every character you were introduced to ended up dead.

6. You don't ever really find out what happened to make Tyler the way he was. It's briefly alluded to that he was an outcast, but nobody ever said why. It's never elaborated on.

7. OR what happened to Sylvia. I won't spoil it, but this is kind of a big thing that shouldn't have been glossed over in a single sentence.

8. The Twitter messages/blog posts were seemingly unnecessary. Literally, what purpose did they serve other than to interrupt the natural flow of the story?

However, there were a few things that I enjoyed about this book, one being the diversity of Autumn and Sylvia's relationship. It's nice to see more and more authors out there reaching across boundary lines. I also really admired Tomas's love for his sister.

All in all, This Is Where It Ends disappointed me because it was a book that I was so excited to get my hands on, but it turned out to be super dry, dragged out, and boring. The book felt like more of a short story, glossing over details, than an actual novel. I know that I shouldn't be demanding super-riveting books about school shootings since that's gruesome and a really taboo topic, but I definitely wish this book had more flavor to it than it ended up having. I'm disappointed.

I hate writing negative reviews, but I genuinely had to write what I felt about this one. This book was not my cup of tea, but I know several people that did end up enjoying it, so I still encourage all of you to give it a fair chance if it's on your TBR before you disregard it.

24909346Title: Gemina (The Illuminae Files, #2)
Authors: Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Genre: Sci-Fi
Publisher: Knopf Books
Publication Date: October 18th, 2016

Summary: Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed. Hanna Donnelly is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik Malikov the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy's most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion. When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station's wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own surivival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands. But relax. They've totally got this. They hope.

Illuminae was one of the weirdest books I've ever read, but it was still definitely one of the best. So I am so excited to get my hands on the second book in the series, and I hope it shocks and amazes me just as much as the first book did!
